Dental Fillings
Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease affecting children in the U.S. When cavities are present, the decision to place a filling depends on factors such as the size of the decay, the patient’s oral hygiene, age, and the expected longevity of the tooth.

There are a few different materials used for dental fillings:
1. Glass Ionomer Cement
-
Glass ionomer offers a good balance of aesthetics and strength. It also releases fluoride, which helps protect the tooth by promoting remineralization and reducing the risk of future decay.
-
This material is durable and provides excellent wear characteristics, making it a reliable option for children.
2. Composite (Tooth-Colored Fillings)
-
Composite is the material of choice for many clinicians due to its superior aesthetics and improved strength compared to earlier versions.
-
It blends with the natural tooth, making it more visually appealing. However, composite is technique-sensitive and may lead to secondary cavities if oral hygiene is not properly maintained.
3. Amalgam (Silver Fillings)
Amalgam has been used for over 100 years and, despite some controversy, remains an FDA-approved and safe filling material.
While it is not aesthetically pleasing, amalgam offers several benefits for patients. It is easy to place, less technique-sensitive, and ideal for posterior (back) teeth.
Amalgam is strong and long-lasting, but it may fracture over time and lacks the natural appearance of other materials.
Your dentist will select the best material based on your child’s specific needs. While no filling lasts forever, with proper oral hygiene, dental restorations can provide many years of service and help maintain healthy teeth.
