Nitrous Oxide (N2O) – Laughing Gas
Nitrous Oxide (N₂O) – Laughing Gas
Nitrous oxide (N₂O), often referred to as laughing gas, is commonly used to reduce anxiety in young patients, especially children. It has a mild sedative effect and is typically combined with oxygen at a concentration of no less than 50%. This method is widely used and considered very safe, with minimal contraindications.

Nitrous oxide helps relax patients, easing anxiety without putting them to sleep. Patients remain awake and responsive throughout the procedure. Additionally, N₂O can reduce the gag reflex, further minimizing discomfort during treatment.
The gas has a rapid onset and minimal lingering effects, allowing patients to return to normal activities shortly after their appointment. It is recommended that patients avoid eating for at least 2 to 4 hours prior to the scheduled treatment.
Our doctors and staff will closely monitor your child throughout the procedure, adjusting the concentration of nitrous oxide and oxygen to maintain the optimal balance for a comfortable treatment experience.
Choosing nitrous oxide for your child's dental appointment is one of the safest, most effective, and reliable ways to ensure a comfortable experience.
